Forward Ever House

A single family modern infill project.

Challenge

Design a highly functional home for a family of four on a narrow urban in-fill lot. Utilize off the shelf finishes for maximum aesthetic impact at low cost.

Process

Due to the urban nature of the site, we used few windows on the front and sides of the property, while maximizing glazing at the south-facing rear of the house. Taking advantage of the ground slope we were able to open the living space to 11ft ceilings at the rear of the ground floor. By extending the walls and eves of the house at the rear we were able to add roughly 350 sf of outdoor living space that seamlessly connects interior and exterior. By placing the attic and mechanical needs in the center of the structure, we were able to use vaulted ceilings in every bedroom. Finally, thoughtful built-ins and finish work by a carpenter allowed us to add clever details when needed.

Outcome

The result was a 2000sf 3 bed, 2.5 bath home, with an office, laundry room, and mudroom. At closing, the house was appraised at nearly $100K higher than total land and construction cost.
